At 75, Age Isn’t the Finish Line

It’s funny how things start sometimes. A chance stop at the Terry Fox statue at Mile 0 in Victoria lit a spark I didn’t even know was still there. At 60, after a 40-year break, I laced up again — mostly out of curiosity, maybe a little stubbornness.

My first Canadian race came in 2011. Then things snowballed. I ran my first marathon in 2017 at the Vancouver Marathon, followed by my first Abbott World Marathon Major — Boston in 2018. Running kept opening doors I never expected: London in 2022, where I received my Bronze medal from Eliud Kipchoge, and Chicago in 2023, earning Silver at the Masters World Championships and shaking hands with the late Kelvin Kiptum — a moment I’ll never forget.

Then 2024 reminded me who’s really in charge. Two serious injuries knocked me out of Berlin and New York. Knee surgery followed in May 2025, but somehow I clawed my way back to run the NYC Marathon that November. Now the knees are acting up again, putting Tokyo in doubt — but I’m still hoping to toe the line. And if all goes well, Berlin in September will be my Sixth Star.

As Terry Fox said, “The journey must continue.” And I’m still moving forward — one careful, grateful step at a time.

Your Path to Progress

January is a fresh start - a time to embrace small, meaningful changes that lead to lasting progress. True transformation happens through daily habits, not drastic, unattainable goals. Whether it’s meal prepping, taking a 10-minute walk on your lunch break, journaling to reflect on your day, adding an extra glass of water or protein to your routine, stretching for 5 minutes in the morning, or swapping one processed snack for a healthier option, every small step is part of your journey. Let’s focus on progress over perfection and build sustainable habits together this year! Slow and steady, wins your race.

Your path to progress is uniquely yours - celebrate the wins, big or small, and recognize the effort it takes to show up every day.
